Here in Honolulu there is a used car dealer near the airport that always has what should be interesting old beaters that one could probably fix up into nice cars.
Like this one:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This looks like it is probably just the horror of the paint, but no. I took a ride out there to stretch the legs on the zx6 (rear brake boiled for some reason, but that’s another story). When I walked up to the car I could see where the hood had been de-creased so there is a definite accident of some sort (maybe even just something left under the hood when closed), but when I asked a salesperson about the car I received a mostly unintelligible answer. It boiled down to the car not running for an unknown reason and $1000 of back taxes on it.
There are lots of cars on their lot that should be saved. I saw a WRX that I would say had been in a fire since the paint was mostly missing, but it was over the whole body, and it still had an interior so I have no clue what the story was. There was a very sad looking Viper on the lot as well.
The lot is Lone Star Motorsports, and you can see their inventory here:

The frustrating thing is that they get many of these cars as donations when a military person leaves the island without selling his/her car and just dumps it at the airport, but they won’t negotiate on the price at all.
I always feel like I visited the Island of Misfit Toys when I walk through and inquire after interesting cars. I can’t help myself though. I still go and look.

Not sure how or what to think about that. Being on the mainland, that crap would put you out of business. Hawaii must be different.

Someone needs to give this ‘78 Fairmont wagon a good home.

That one actually did look good on the lot.

I think they survive on the one or two decent cars on the lot that they must buy from auction. I really have no understanding of how they make any money. There is a 1992 325i BMW on the lot that looked interesting from a ‘have a fun project’ point of view and it is evidently only fit for the scrapyard (on the mechanical side of things). But there it sits with a price tag of over $1000.
